FISHERS, Ind. — Hamilton Southeastern High School is proud to announce the hiring of Steve Herman as the next Head Coach of the HSE Girls Cross Country program pending Hamilton Southeastern Schools Board of Trustees approval. Herman brings a strong background in distance running and athlete development to the Royals program. He has served as an assistant coach for both the HSE boys and girls distance programs since 2021, helping continue the tradition of excellence that has defined Hamilton Southeastern cross country and track & field. “Coach Herman embodies what it means to be a Hamilton Southeastern Royal,” said HSE Athletic Director Drew Tower. “He has been a pillar of our cross country program, and I’m excited to watch our student-athletes continue to grow and succeed under his leadership.” During his time on staff, Herman has contributed to significant team and individual success, including coaching on the 2021 Boys Cross Country State Runner-Up team and the 2026 Girls Track & Field State Runner-Up team. He has also helped coach multiple school record holders in the girls 800-meter run, 3200-meter run, 4x800 relay, and boys cross country. “As an assistant coach for the girls track distance program, Steve Herman has had tremendous success because of the effort he puts in every day to ensure each athlete receives training that best fits their abilities,” said Girls Track & Field Head Coach Julie Alano. “He works hard to create opportunities for every athlete to succeed, and three school records have been broken in the distance events over the past two years. Our team is excited to have Coach Herman leading the girls cross country program.” “I am excited to usher in this new era of HSE Cross Country,” Herman said. “I will do everything with excellence and create a positive team atmosphere where the girls can grow as people and athletes.” In addition to coaching, Herman is a physics teacher at HSE High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Purdue University and a Master of Education degree from Indiana Wesleyan University. A lifelong endurance athlete himself, Herman also completed the 2011 Ironman Louisville Triathlon. Herman and his wife, Jenny, who serves as the school nurse at Thorpe Creek Elementary, live in Fishers with their family. Their daughter Elise attends Purdue University, while their daughter Annie is a student at HSE High School. “What excites me most about leading this program is the rich history of distance running at HSE,” Herman said. “We have a motivated group of girls who are excited to continue to grow as athletes and teammates.” Herman emphasized that relationships and culture will remain central to his coaching philosophy. “I value the relationships that I am able to develop with runners, as well as helping athletes develop lifelong relationships with each other,” he said. “Runners perform at their best when they feel connected to each other and to their school.” Looking ahead, Herman hopes to continue building a championship-level program while honoring the traditions established throughout the program’s history. “My initial goal is to get our team back in the conversation as a program competing for the podium at the state meet every year,” Herman said. “I also plan to continue some of our great traditions while helping our girls develop new traditions of their own.” Hamilton Southeastern Athletics is excited to welcome Coach Herman into this leadership role and looks forward to the future of Royals Girls Cross Country under his direction. HSE Girls Cross Country families are invited to the kickoff meeting Wednesday, June 3rd from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm in Café D at HSE High School.
